The Pelvic floor

Having strong pelvic floor muscles gives up better control over our bladder and bowels. And YES men have pelvic floor muscles too! Men use the muscles to help with the bladder and bowel, as do women, but they also use them for the uterus too.

But why are they so important for helping support our lower backs? well our pelvic floor muscles work in conjunction with our abdominal and back muscles to help support our spine to increase intra-abdominal pressure during functional tasks, such as lifting.

Even though we can’t see our Pelvic floor muscles, they can be trained like the rest of our muscles to be stronger and one of the best ways to do this is through Pilates!

Pilates helps us contracted our pelvic floor muscles while performing a number of controlled conscious exercises, which in turn will allow the muscles to contracted sub-consciously when we walk, run, lift, sneeze, cough and much more.
